UMW Women's Lacrosse Edges Shenandoah, 13-12, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team rallied late to defeat Shenandoah University, 13-12, on Wednesday evening in Winchester, Va. The Eagles improve to 6-4 on the season.

In a contest that remained close throughout, UMW started the scoring with a goal from Kayla Sarazin at 13:05, and another from Rebecca Pullen at 11:56. After Shenandoah cut the lead in half, Katie Blair added another goal at 8:46. The Hornets then scored three straoght to take the lead, but the Eagles tied the score with eight seconds left on a goal from Clare Madden.

In the second quarter, Sarazin again started the scoring at 13:17, but SU came back with three straight scores. Blair scored on a Madden assist with 4:00 left to pull UMW to within 7-6, but the Hornets scored another to take an 8-6 lead to halftime.

The Eagles started quickly in the third quarter, scoring three straight to take the lead. Blair scored with 11:00 left, followed by Madden at 7:42 and Blair again at 5:54. Shenandoah scored two goals late to take a 10-9 lead to the fourth quarter.

Shenandoah opened the fourth with a goal to extend its lead to 11-9, before UMW made the last and biggest run of the game, scoring four of the last five to grab the win. Pullen scored at 10:42, before Madden added another at 9:59, and Sarazin gave the Eagles the lead with 7:45 to go. After SU tied the score, Sarazin scored what would be the game winner with 4:17 to play.

Sarazin led UMW with four goals and an assist, and Blair added four scores. Madden had three goals and an assist. 

The Eagles led in shots, 30-26, and won 16 of 29 draw controls. UMW goalkeeper Reilly Miller made nine saves, while Sarazin led with 10 draw controls.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday, when the Eagles host Salisbury University at noon.
