UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls in Opener at #3 W&L, 14-7

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped its 2022 season opener on the road at third-ranked Washington & Lee University, 14-7, in Lexington, Va. on Wednesday evening.

The Generals opened the scoring in the first minute, but the Eagles responded with 12:21 remaining, as junior attacker Erin Steinberg scored on a Bridget Crowley assist. Washington & Lee then reeled off four straight to close the first quarter to take a 5-1 lead to the second.

In period two, Washington & Lee scored the first five goals of the frame, but UMW got one back with 2:05 remaining, as sophomore attacker Katie Blair scored on a free position shot. In the third, W&L scored twice, as both defenses stiffened, before UMW added one from Kayla Sarazin with 1:18 remaining on a free position score.

In the fourth, the Eagles outscored the Generals, 4-1. Freshman Molly Daw scored with 9:56 left on a Crowley assist, and, after a W&L score, senior Rebecca Pullen scored three straight in the final 5:51 of play. Crowley and Samantha Stachowiak each picked up assists in the run.

Washington & Lee led in shots, 32-17, as well as ground balls, 16-9. Senior goalie Reilly Miller made 10 saves for the Eagles, and Stachowiak added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Eagles will return to action next Wednesday at Rhodes College at 3:00 p.m.
