Haskins, Kennedy Lead UMW Women’s Lacrosse Past Lynchburg, 18-10, on Saturday Evening

Senior Paige Haskins and sophomore Kennedy King each netted five goals each to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team past Lynchburg University, 18-10, on Saturday evening in Lynchburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season.

Lynchburg opened the scoring early as they netted two goals in the first two minutes of the game. UMW answered with six straight goals to take a 6-2 lead. Morgan Shorts scored the first one, then Kennedy King added the second goal. Paige Haskins got on the board with 19:34 to play, then King added her second of the day. Tess Siburn and Samantha Stachowiak capped the scoring for UMW in the 6-0 run as Stachowiak scored the last one with 17:28 left. 

The Hornets ended the run with a goal, but the Eagles didn't stop there as they scored three straight goals. Haskins scored unassisted, then Rebecca Pullen added a goal, and King scored on a free position shot to put UMW up 9-3 with 7:54 left in the first half. The Hornets closed the half with two goals and put the game at 9-5.

In the second half, Haskins added two straight goals just 2:40 in to put UMW up 11-5. After a Lynchburg goal, Stachowiak added her second of the day. Shorts extended the lead for the Eagles as she added two goals to take a 14-6 advantage with 20:23 to play. The Hornets broke up the scoring from UMW with 17:45 to play to put the score at 14-7.

From there, the Eagles went on another 3-0 run. King scored two straight free position shots and then freshman Clare Madden added a goal with 11:02 left to put the Eagles up 17-7. Lynchburg tried to make a late run in the game as they scored three straight goals, but the Eagles defense held strong from there. Haskins capped the scoring on the day as she scored in a man-up opportunity on an assist from Madden.

Kayla Sarazin led the team with nine draw controls, while Haskins added five. Stachowiak caused three turnovers and added three ground balls. Reilly Miller made nine saves in goal and also picked up five ground balls. 

UMW had 20 draw controls and won the shot battle, 35-22. The Eagles picked up 19 ground balls.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host Randolph-Macon at 3:45 p.m.
