The ninth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse fell to eighth-ranked York College, 12-1, in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals on Tuesday night in York, PA. The Eagles slip to 15-4 overall.
In the early going, York scored just 1:29 into the game and added another goal with 22:45 left to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles responded with a goal a minute later as Hope Lockwood scored on an assist from Mackenzie Maguire go get within one. UMW tied the game up at two a piece with 18:28 remaining as Kristen Kunaniec scored on an assist from Maguire. Just 30 seconds later, the Spartans regained the lead 3-2.
Kunaniec tied the game back up as she scored unassisted with 15:12 left. From there, UMW's offense went cold as they failed to score over the last 15 minutes of the half. York took advantage as they added two goals, the last coming with just four-seconds left, to take a 5-3 lead at the half.
The Spartans kept the pressure on UMW as they scored the first three goals of the half to hold an 8-3 lead with 20:59 remaining. Maguire ended the drought for the Eagles as she scored a goal with 18:37 left, and then added another goal just 30 seconds later to get UMW within three, 8-5.
Allison Davis got on the board as she scored on a free position shot, and then Maguire scored her third of the half with 14:21 remaining to put the Eagles down just one goal, 8-7. The Spartans responded with two straight goals to increase their lead to three, 10-7. Kunaniec added a goal on an assist from Maguire with 7:34 to cut the lead to 10-8. York added two more goals to extend their lead to 12-8 with just 4:49 left in the game.
UMW then made a comeback to get the game within just one goal. Lockwood scored on a free position shot, then Lockwood scored on an assist from Maguire with 1:30 remaining. On the ensuing draw, Paige Haskins won the draw and Julia Albert put her 63rd goal of the season in the back of the net with 1:15 to play to put the Eagles down one, 12-11. York won the last draw of the game and held the ball to run out the clock and win the game.
Rylie Cole led the team with five draw controls. Sarah Hampton had two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
The Eagles await their destiny as they will find out if they make the NCAA tournament on Sunday night at 9:30 p.m.
