#17 UMW Women's Lacrosse Opens with 12-4 Win Over Meredith

Three goals from sophomore attacker Mackenzie Maguire led the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 12-4 victory over Meredith University at the Battleground Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles are now 1-0 on the young season.

Meredith jumped on the board first, scoring in the first 1:30 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles responded just minutes later when Kelsey Vincent scored off a free-position shot to tie the game. At the 24:08 mark, Julia Albert found Paige Haskins to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Maguire followed with two unassisted goals to put the Eagles up 4-1 with 18:21 left in the half. Emily Mott found the net off a Vincent assist with 2:03 left in the clock. Mott scored again with 39 seconds left to give the Eagles a 6-1 advantage. Meredith scored with nine seconds left to bring the score to 6-2 at the half.

In the second, Albert found Kate Smucker in the first two minutes to put the Eagles up five. Minutes later, Maguire scored another unassisted goal to give the Eagles an 8-2 lead with 24:27 left in the game. At the 17:58 mark, Allison Davis found Paige Haskins for another Eagles goal.

Meredith responded with two straight goals to cut the lead to 9-4, but the Eagles closed the game by scoring three straight, including two from Holly Hudson and one from Albert to cap the scoring at 12-4.

Four Eagles scored at least two goals, and Vincent lead the Eagles with three assists. Mott caused four turnovers and picked up six ground balls.

Mary Washington led in shots, 28-12, while Meredith led in draw controls, 11-7. Hanna Ashby had six saves in goal for the Eagles, and Haley Whitfield had seven for the Avenging Angels.

The Eagles are back in action next Saturday as they host Washington & Lee at 1:00 pm.
