#13 UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls at #14 St. Mary's, 11-10, in Wild CAC Showdown

The 13th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team overcame a slow start to grab the lead in the second half, and overcame a pair of lightning delays, before falling at 14th ranked St. Mary's College, 11-10, on Thursday afternoon and evening. The Eagles slip to 11-3 on the season, and 4-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Seahawks ran out to an early 3-0 lead over the first 13 minutes of the game. UMW got on the scoreboard with 15:38 left in the half when Kelsey Vincent scored on a Sabrina Elliott assist. The Seahawks pushed their lead to 4-1 with 12 minutes left, but the Eagles answered a minute later, as Ashlyn Dacey scored on a free position shot.

The Seahawks scored a pair of goals to push their lead to 6-2, before the Eagles answered with two scores before halftime. Mackenzie Maguire scored on a Dacey assist with 2:06 left, and Vincent scored again on an Elliott assist with 1:21 remaining to cut the deficit to 6-4 at intermission.

Mary Washington opened the second half with three straight goals to take the lead for the first time. Dacey scored with 28:11 left, and again with 26:49 left on an Elliott assist, to tie the score, and Maguire scored just 11 seconds later to give the Eagles the 7-6 lead.

St. Mary's tied the score before another pair of Eagle tallies put the visitors ahead, 9-7. Maguire scored on a free position shot, and a lengthy lightning delay followed. After play was resumed, Dacey scored unassisted with 17 minutes left, and the Eagles held a 9-7 lead into a second lightning delay.

After play was finally resumed, the Seahawks scored three straight goals to take a 10-9 lead, before Dacey scored with 4:47 remaining to tie the score. The Seahawks found the game winner with 1:56 remaining on a free position shot.

St. Mary's led in shots, 22-19, while each team had 12 ground balls. Freshman goalie Hanna Ashby had five saves for the Eagles, while Kayla Dunn had five stops for SMC.

The Eagles will be back in action on April 13 when they host Christopher Newport University at 4:00 p.m.
