The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team used six second half goals from senior attacker Jenna Petrucelli to break open a tight contest in a 17-10 victory over Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday at a chilly Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-2 on the season.

The first half was a back and forth affair, with neither team leading by one score throughout. Senior Katie Williams opened the scoring at 28:40 on a Corinne Wiederkehr asisst, but the Yellow Jackets answered with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead with 5:37 elapsed in the game.

With 22:08 remaining, junior Emily Atkinson tied the score, and after another Yellow Jacket goal put them ahead, 3-2, Petrucelli scored on another Wiederkehr pass with 18:55 remaining. Atkinson scored again midway through the half to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead, and after another RMC tying tally, Atkinson found the nets once more to give UMW a 5-4 edge.

The Jackets scored twice to take a 6-5 lead, but the Eagles closed the half with a pair of goals of their own, from Kelsey Vincent with 3:59 left, and Megan Gersbeck with 1:14 to go, to take a 7-6 lead to halftime.

In the second, Petrucelli and Atkinson scored to give UMW a 9-6 advantage, but again RMC answered with a pair of goals to cut the score to 9-8. From there, UMW took over, with Petrucelli scoring three straight to up the lead to 12-8 with 13:25 to play.

After an RMC score, UMW scored four times, with goals from Gersbeck, Ashlyn Dacey, Petrucelli, and Wiederkehr to put the game away at 16-9 with 5:08 to play. The teams traded goals at the end, with Petrucelli capping the scoring with 2:21 left.

The Yellow Jackets led in shots, 28-27, and in draw controls, 16-14, while senior Kelly Dean made 13 saves for the Eagle defense. Petrucelli added nine draw controls to her seven goals and assist.

Mary Washington will be in action again on Saturday when the Eagles host #1 Salisbury University at noon.
