Petrucelli's School Record 10 Goals Lead UMW Women's Lax Past St. Mary's, 24-18, in CAC Tilt

Junior midfielder Jenna Petrucelli scored a school-record 10 goals to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 24-18 win over St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in CAC play.

In a game of scoring runs, UMW struck first, taking a 2-0 lead on goals from Keller Torrey and Katie Williams in the opening minutes before St. mary's answered with three straight scores to take a 3-2 lead. Emily Atkinson then scored to tie the game and Torrey added two more to give UMW a 5-3 advantage with 19:47 left in the first half.

The teams then traded the next six goals, with Megan Gersbeck, Petrucelli, and Atkinson finding the nets for UMW. Atkinson's goal started a 6-0 spurt for UMW, with Petrucelli scoring twice and four others adding solo scores. UMW held a 13-8 halftime advantage, as the Seahawks closed the half with two goals.

St. Mary's started the second half by scoring five of the first seven goals to cut the deficit to 15-13 with 22:01 left. St. Mary's then forged closer at 18-17 with 8:45 left, but the Eagles scored six of the final seven goals of the game for the 24-18 win.

Petrucelli breaks the school record for goals in a game with 10, surpassing the old mark of nine held by Pam Heller and Suzy Baughman, both set way back in 1988. She also had one assist, coming within three points of the school mark for points in a game with 11. Torrey had five goals and three assists for the Eagles as well.

Kathryn Stiltz had two saves and Taylor Paige had one for the Eagles in goal, while Katie Mastropaolo had seven ground balls.

The Eagles will return to action on Sunday when they host Washington & Lee University at 2:00 p.m.
