Wiederkehr, Torrey Lead #20 UMW Women's Lax Past Frostburg in CAC Action, 16-8

Sophomore Corinne Wiederkehr scored a career-high five goals and senior Keller Torrey added a goal and six assists in leading the #20 University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 16-8 win over Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-4 on the season.

Junior Megan Gersbeck opened the scoring for UMW with 27:03 left in the first, and Katie Williams and Wiederkehr followed with scores to give UMW a 3-0 lead with 20:57 remaining. After a Bobcat goal, UMW scored five straight up up its lead to 8-1. Wiederkehr scored three times in the run, while Jenna Petrucelli and Emily Atkinson netted one apiece.

At the five minute remaining mark, the Bobcats scored three straight to cut the deficit to 8-4, but the Eagles closed the half with three straight goals. Hallie Ertel scored with 49 seconds left, and Petrucelli scored with six seconds left. After winning the draw, Petrucelli sprinted to goal and scored just before the final horn to give UMW an 11-4 lead at the half.

Atkinson scored in the first minute for UMW in the second, and after an FSU score, Wiederkehr scored again with 19:52 left. The Bobcats scored twice to cut the deficit to 13-6, but Torrey scored with 16:04 left for UMW. Teams traded goals the rest of the way, with Ashlyn Dacey and Kara Hogan scoring for the Eagles.

UMW led in shots, 38-14, and in ground balls, 30-23. Kathryn Stiltz and Taylor Paige each had one save in goal for UMW. Mackenzie Sloan and Priscilla Smith each had five gorund balls to lead UMW.

Mary Washington will return to action on Tuesday when they host nationally ranked Catholic university at 4:00 p.m.
