The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped an 12-2 decision at fourth-ranked Gettysburg College on Thursday afternoon, dropping the 13th-ranked Eagles to 1-1 on the young season.

The Bullets started in a flourish, scoring twice in the opening 48 seconds of play. Gettysburg ran its lead to 5-0 in the opening five minutes, but the Eagle defense settled down from that point forward, allowing just two more scores in the next 25 minutes, and the Bullets led, 7-0, at halftime.

The hosts then scored two straight before Sperbeck scored again with 17:34 left to cut the deficit to 10-2. Gettysburg scored again with 14 minutes remaining, and capped the scoring with three seconds left.

The Bullets led in shots, 31-15, and in ground balls, 23-17. UMW goalkeeper Kathryn Stiltz had nine saves for the Eagles in 60 minutes of action. Senior defender Katie Mastropaolo had four ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they visit Wesley College at 2:00 p.m. in the Capital Athletic Conference opener.
