#13 UMW Women's Lax Tops CNU, 15-10, To Improve to 12-3

The 13th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team used the strength of its record-setting senior class on Senior Day, defeating Christopher Newport University, 15-10, on Thursday at the Battleground. The Eagles close the regular season with a record of 12-3, while CNU falls to 14-2.

Mary Washington opened the scoring with three straight goals, by seniors Catherine Kennedy and Allie Kimmelman - the top two scorers in school history. Kimmelman started the scoring just 1:08 into the game, and Kennedy followed with a pair of goals over the span of the next five minutes. CNU answered with two goals to cut the deficit to one, but the Eagles then netted five of the next six goals of the game to extend its lead to 8-3 with 6:43 remaining in the first half.

CNU closed the first half by scoring three straight to cut the halftime deficit to 8-6, but the Eagles immediately went back to work to start the second half, as Kimmelman scored 30 seconds into the half. Junior Keller Torrey scored two goals to propel a 7-2 streak that gave UMW a 15-8 edge with 12 minutes remaining. The Captains scored twice in the final minutes to cut the final to 15-10.

The Eagles were led by Kennedy's four goals and one assist, Kimmelman's two goals and three assists, and Torrey's two goals and three assists. The Eagles led in shots, 30-24, and each team had 26 ground balls. The Captains led in draw controls, 16-11, and junior Kathryn Stiltz had seven saves in goal for UMW.

UMW will host Marymount University in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
