1994 MWC Women's Lacrosse Season in Review

When taking the reins of Mary Washington College women's lacrosse four years ago, head coach Dana Hall had two main goals. One, to recruit student-athletes with substantial high school experience who could contribute immediately and two, to see her Eagles become perennial contenders for postseason tournament competition.

She has succeeded on the first front. Last season alone, nine of the top 11 scorers were freshmen or sophomores. Losing just one senior to graduation - and welcoming back just one junior from '94 - she has ensured smooth transitions for the next two seasons. And her team showed late-season signs of promise, defeating a strong Division II team in Longwood on the road and losing highly competitive games to nationally ranked Western Maryland and Salisbury State to close the season.

To reach the second goal, a talented returning cast must keep improving. Juniors Heather Hallowes (Glastonbury, CT) and Eliza Huber (Doylestown, PA) are proven scorers. Hallowes scored 31 goals with 14 assists for 45 points. Huber was named an Honorable mention All-Region player after a 19-goal, six-assist (25 points) campaign. Charlotte Cockrell (So./ Silver Spring, MD) was a strong contributor in '94, with 19goals and four assists for 23 points. Double figure goal scorers’ Liza Barber (So./Weekapaug, RI; 14) and Cheryl Cole (Sr./ Avondale, PA; 10) also return, along with Kristie Fasanaro (So./ Stony Brook, NY; eight goals), Melissa Schreiber (So./Jarrettsville, MD; seven goals) and Audrey O'Brien Jr/ Huntington, NY; six goals). A young defense welcomes back dependable starters Jen Wassif (Jr./Pasadena, MD), Tricia Kube Jr./Doylestown, PA), Amy Halter Jr./ Parsippany, NJ), Inga Fredland (So./ Annapolis, MD), Mindy Voguit Jr./Wernersville, PA) and Gina Pisoni (So./Langley, VA). Veterans Nicole Matthews (So./ Fairfax, VA) and Stephanie Lowe (Jr./Centreville, VA) allowed less than 12 goals per game, and look to improve in their second year of collegiate experience.

MWC traditionally plays a highly competitive regional schedule, and 1995 is no exception. Defending national champion Trenton State, NCAA semifinalist Johns Hopkins and Top-15 teams Rowan, Washington & Lee, Lynchburg and Salisbury State grace the up- coming slate. This also marks the inaugural season of Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) women's lacrosse. In addition, MWC will make its annual Spring Break and Salisbury State. grace the up- coming slate.
