Mary Washington Women's Basketball Falls to CNU in C2C Championship Game

The Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to Christopher Newport on Saturday night in the Coast-to-Coast Conference chammpionship game in Newport News, Va., 71-67.

The Eagles fought their way through with a total team effort the entire night as four of their starters recorded double-digit figures. Sydney Sherman (15 points) led the way for UMW, followed by Jordan Carpenter (14), Keagan Schwab (10) and Ashley Martin (10). Addie Riner, meanwhile, recorded eight points off the bench.

The Eagles did a solid job on the defensive end as they held CNU to just a 21-for-63 mark from the floor (33.3%), and just a 4-of-21 mark from deep (19.2%). But the Captains did their damage at the free throw line, making 25 of their 30 attempts.

On offense, Mary Washington made 23 of its 47 shots (48.9%) and was 3-of-10 from deep (30%), but turned the ball over 21 times compared to CNU's 11 times.

The Eagles stayed close most of the way after falling down by 16 with five minutes left in the first half, but turned it into an eight-point deficit to end the first half. The Eagles then outscored the Captains by four, 16-12, in the third quarter. In the fourth, the Eagles were within a point with eight minutes to play but couldn't quite get over the hump as they finished the game behind by four points.

Mary Washington, who was ranked No. 6 in the Region VI rankings last week, will await its destinity on Selection Monday to see if it is selected for an at-large bid to the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
