Mary Washington Women's Basketball Blows Out Lynchburg on Friday night, 83-36

It didn't take long for the Mary Washington women's basketball team (9-4) to take control of Friday night's matchup with Lynchburg in its 83-36 victory over the Hornets in Fredericksburg, Va.

Senior Jordan Carpenter scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, which was good for her 11th double-double in 13 games -- entering Friday, Carpenter ranked second in Division III women's hoops in double-doubles.

Meanwhile, forward Sydney Sherman scored a season-high 19 points in the victory on 9-of-11 shooting and assisted on three of the Eagles' baskets.

Lynchburg kept it close in the first quarter as the Eagles headed into the second period with a 19-12 lead before they exploded for 24 points in the quarter. The defense held the Hornets to just five points as the Eagles took a 43-17 lead into the half.

From there, it was much of the same story as Mary Washington outscored Lynchburg by 21 points in the second half, 40-19.

For the day, the Eagles went 34-of-70 from the floor (48.6%) and cashed in a trio of 3-pointer's. The defense, meanwhile, forced 29 turnovers and came away with 15 steals -- Carpenter led the way with five of her own -- with 35 of UMW's points coming off of turnovers.

Lynchburg shot just 12-of-44 (27.3%) and 5-of-24 from deep (20.8%), recording just 29 rebounds to UMW's 44.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 13 for a matchup at Washington & Lee.
