Balanced Attack Leads UMW Women Past Stevenson, 91-45

Sophomore guard Elizabeth Dufrane scored 17 points, junior forward Sydney Sherman 16, and junior guard Keagan Schwab 13, as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team used a balanced attack, with 12 players reaching the scoring column, to defeat Stevenson University, 91-45, on Monday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 14-2 on the season.

Senior Karissa Highlander started strong for the Eagles, netting a pair of baskets as UMW built a 6-1 lead. The Mustangs hit a pair of three pointers to take a 12-7 lead with 4:49 left in the first, but Schwab led an 8-0 run with six points, and UMW led, 15-12, with 3:15 remaining. After a Stevenson free throw, UMW then scored another six straight, with four from Schwab. A Sherman basket capped the scoring with UMW carrying a 23-17 lead.

In the second, the Eagle offense continued to thrive, and the defense matched that output, as UMW outscored the Mustangs, 27-10. UMW opened with a 12-2 run, led by six from Dufrane. The Mustangs drew to within 38-26 with 3:47 left, but another 8-0 run followed, and the Eagles led, 50-27, at halftime.

In the third, UMW excelled again, outscoring Stevenson, 20-2. After the teams traded baskets to open the frame, UMW netted 18 straight points, while the Mustangs struggled with eight missed shots and six turnovers. In the fourth, eight different Eagles found the scoring column, as the Eagles outscored the guests, 21-16.

Dufrane made 7-10 shots en route to 17 points, and added four assists. Sherman made 8-9 shots for 16, and Schwab made 6-13 shots from the field with a three pointer. Jordan Carpenter and Ashley Martin each had nine points. Sherman led with six rebounds.

UMW shot 57.1% from the floor (40-70), making 4-15 three point attempts and 7-14 free throws. Stevenson shot 34.9% (15-43), making 4-18 three point tries and 11-17 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 35-24, and caused 27 turnovers.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Christopher Newport University at 6:00 p.m.
