UMW Women's Basketball Advances Past W & L in 70-58 OT Win

Juniors Sydney Sherman and Keegan Schwab led the way with 19 and 18 points, with sixteen rebounds and two assists between the two, respectively, to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 70-58 victory when hosting the Washington and Lee University Generals on Tuesday night in Fredericksburg, Va. Sophomores Megan Baxter, Adeline Riner, and Elizabeth Dufrane combine for twenty points, five rebounds, and two steals for the Eagles.

The Eagles had a slow start, falling behind, 16-10, after one quarter. Alas, UMW outscored the Generals, 19-10, in the second quarter to take an three-point advantage at halftime. The Eagles defense had their work cut out for them as the Generals bounced back in the second half to tie the game at the end of regulation at 56. However, Washington and Lees' momentum would end in overtime, as the Eagles defense allowed only two points to UMW's 14. The Eagles offense shined throughout the contest, capitalizing on Washington and Lee mistakes and creating 24 points off turnovers, to W & L's 9.

The Eagles shot 36.5% from the field (27-74), making 3-18 three point attempts (16.7%), and 13-22 free throws (59.1%). Randolph-Macon shot 25.9% 15-58) from the floor, making 4-20 three point attempts(20%), and 24-32 free throws(75%). The Eagles were outrebounded, 53-45, but forced 23 W & L turnovers with 7 steals.

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host Meredith College at 6:00 p.m.
