UMW Women's Basketball Opens with 57-40 Win at F&M

Sophomore guard Megan Baxter led the way with 17 points, four rebounds, and four assists, in leading the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 57-40 victory at Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday night in Lancaster, Pa. Junior Jordan Carpenter added nine points and eight rebounds for the Eagles.

The Eagles broke out of the gate slowly, falling behind, 15-7, after one quarter. But UMW outscored the Diplomats, 20-9, in the second quarter to take a one-point edge to halftime. The Eagles defense continued to shine in the third and fourth quarters, holding the hosts to eight points per quarter while extending the lead to a final margin of 17 points.

The Eagles shot 36.5% from the field (23-63), making 3-12 three point attempts, and 8-10 free throws. F&M shot 20% (10-50) from the floor, making 4-15 three point attempts, and 16-26 free throws. The Eagles were outrebounded, 44-40, but forced 21 F&M turnovers with 13 steals.

UMW will be back in action on Friday, when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 6:00 p.m.
