The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 49-41 decision at Salisbury University on Wednesday evening in Capital Athletic Conference action on Maryland's Eastern shore. The Eagles slip to 10-10 overall, and 4-5 in league play.

The first quarter was tightly contested, as the Sea Gulls raced to a 7-2 lead before UMW used a basket from Erika Carter and a pair of free throws from Meghan Comer to draw to within one, at 7-6, with 7:10 left. The Sea Gulls broke a scoreless span for both sides with a free throw with 4:51 remaining, and connected on three more free throws before a Carter basket with 2:46 left drew the Eagles to within 11-8. Junior Emily Thompson added a basket with 2:07 remaining to cap the quarter scoring, with the Eagles down just one, at 11-10.

In the second, both defenses remained stout, as neither team found a point for the first 3:32. Those points went to Carter and the Eagles, who took their first lead at 12-11. From there, the Sea Gulls closed the quarter on an 11-2 run, and held a 22-14 advantage at intermission.

In the third quarter, the Eagles used a 13-0 run to start the frame, keyed by six points from Thompson and four from Carter, to grabe a 27-22 lead with 3:03 left. Five straight Sea Gull points knotted the score, but Carter capped the quarter scoring to give the Eagles a 29-27 edge into the fourth quarter.

Salisbury tied the score a minute into play in the fourth, and, after a Jordan Pamlanye basket, hit a three pointer to retake the lead at 32-31 with 7:34 left. After the teams traded points, Salisbury scored six straight to assume a 40-33 lead with 4:17 remaining. Pamlanye and Carter responded with baskets to move the margin to 40-37, but five straight Sea Gull free throws expanded the lead to 45-37. Four points from Pamlanye were sandwiched between four SU free throws, as the hosts gained the 49-41 win.

Carter led the Eagles with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Pamlanye added 11. UMW shot 32.6% form the floor (15-46), making 1-13 three point attempts and 10-13 free throws. Salisbury shot 28.1% (16-57), making 3-19 three point shots and 14-21 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 43-34, but committed 23 turnovers.

UMW will return to action on Saturday when they visit Christopher Newport University at 2:00 p.m.
