The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team used a balanced attack to defeat Frostburg St. 63-53 on Wednesday night in Ron Rosner Arena. Freshman Madison Shifflett led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points.

In the early going, both teams traded baskets until Shifflett made a layup to give the Eagles a 7-4 lead 5:52 left in the first quarter. The Bobcats closed the gap and were down 1, 9-8, until UMW went on a 6-0 run with freshman Tory Martin scoring four of those points. Meghan Comer ended the first quarter with a free throw and UMW led 18-11.

UMW scored the first five points of the second quarter on a three-pointer from Emily Thompson and a layup from Claire Mocarski to up the lead to 23-11 with 8:15 remaining in the quarter. Over the next 5:00 Frostburg St. went on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 25-24. Martin made another layup to up the score to 27-24. With 23 seconds left in the quarter, Shifflett nailed a three-pointer and put the Eagles up 6, 30-24, going into halftime. Shifflett led the Eagles with seven points and six rebounds in the first half.

The Bobcats started out the first 2:35 on an 8-3 run to cut the lead to 33-32. Frostburg St. took the lead 38-35 with 5:29 left in the quarter. UMW responded and went on a 11-2 run as they retook the lead 46-40 on two free throws from Comer with 50 seconds remaining. McKenzie Jenkins made a free throw with 14 seconds left that gave the Eagles a 47-43 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

UMW started out hot in the fourth quarter as they went on a 9-1 run that was capped by a Kayla Sakyi layup, to push the lead to 56-44 with 5:49 remaining in the game. Jordan Pamlanye sank a layup with 3:34 left to keep the Eagles up 11, 60-49. Shifflett made a three-pointer with 1:58 left and the Eagles would go on to win 63-53.

Martin came off the bench to score 10 points. Pamlanye, Comer, and Sakyi all contributed seven points. Taylor Barton and Thompson added six points. Victoria Yoder led the Bobcats in scoring with 12 points.

The Eagles shot 43.6% (24-55) from the field, making 5-14 three-pointers, and 10-15 free throws. The Bobcats shot 35.7% (20-56) from the field, making 3-17 three-pointers, and 10-14 free throws. UMW out rebounded Frostburg St. 40-33 and they dished out 11 assists.

UMW will travel to Marymount on Saturday at 1 p.m. for another CAC showdown.
