#12 UMW Women's Basketball Tops Southern Va., 72-56, in Wednesday Night CAC Encounter

Senior center Brianne Comden scored 15 points, while sophomore guard McKenzie Jenkins added a season-high 12, as the 12th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Southern Virginia University, 72-56, on Wednesday evening in Capital Athletic Conference action in Buena Vista, Va. Senior Megan Green also reached double figures with 10 points for the Eagles, now 14-0 overall and 7-0 in league play.

After the Knights opened the scoring, Green kickstarted the Eagle offense with a three pointer and a jumper, and Comden followed with a pair of baskets, as the Eagles led, 8-6, with 6:29 left in the first. UMW closed the quarter on a 12-2 run, led by points from four different players.

After Southern Virginia scored the first three points of the second, Green hit a three pointer, and the lead swung back and forth between nine and 12 points through the second ten minutes. Sophomore Alannah Miller hit a three pointer with seven seconds left to build the lead to 14, at 36-22.

Following intermission, the Eagles quickly upped their lead to 16 on a Taylor Barton layup. The Knights cut the margin to six, at 42-36, with 5:19, but Jenkins drained a three pointer to return the lead to nine, and junior Kendall Parker added another, as the lead returned to double figures. The Eagles led by 12, 49-37, entering the fourth period.

The Eagles pulled away in the final frame, with Barton starting with the Eagles' first four points. A pair of Jenkins free throws with 5:45 remaining gave the Eagles a 20-point margin, at 62-42. Southern Va. rallied to cut the margin to 12 in the final minutes, before Jenkins and Parker closed the matter with three point baskets.

Comden made 4-9 shots from the floor, and 7-12 free throws en route to top scoring honors. Jenkins made a pair of three pointers to pace her 12 point effort, and Green added a pair of treys en route to her double digit output. Both Green and Jenkins posted five assists. Barton recorded a career high 18 rebounds while adding nine points for the Eagle attack.

UMW shot 39.7% from the field (23-58), making 8-26 three point attempts and 18-28 free throws. Southern Va. shot 33.3% (18-54), connecting on 4-14 three pointers and finishing 16-28 from the free throw line. The Eagles controlled the boards, 40-29.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host Wesley College at 1:00 p.m. in another CAC matchup.
