Comden's Double-Double Leads UMW Women's Basketball Past Marymount, 48-34

Junior center Brianne Comden registered a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in 27 minutes to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 48-34 win over Marymount University on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action. Freshman Elizabeth Dofflemyer added 11 points for the Eagles, who improve to 19-4 overall and 13-3 in CAC play.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead, outscoring the Saints, 7-1, in the opening minutes, with Comden scoring four and senior Sarah Listenbee adding three. After Marymount closed the gap to 8-7 with 4:29 left in the first, freshman McKenzie Jenkins and Comden added baskets to push the lead back to five. A pair of Comden free throws gave UMW a 14-8 lead after 10 minutes.

After Taylor Barton connected for a jumper to open the second, Marymount again closed the gap to four by the 3:39 mark. But the Eagles used a pair of Dofflemyer three pointers, as well as a pair of free throws, to take a 24-14 lead into halftime. UMW limited the Saints to just four first half field goals.

The Saints opened the third with five straight points to cut the deficit to 24-19, but a three pointer from Megan Green returned the lead to seven, and the Eagles used a Meghan Comer three pointer to push the lead to nine at 34-25 with 4:05 left in the third. Kendall Parker connected on a pair of free throws to give UMW a 38-28 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Comden started the scoring in the fourth, but Marymount returned with a basket to move the score to 40-30 with 6:56 left. That was as close as the Saints would come, as the Eagles would hit six free throws down the stretch for a 48-34 win.

Comden went 6-8 from the field, and 6-10 from the line en route to 18 points, despite playing three quarters with foul trouble. Dofflemyer made 3-8 field goals, including a pair of three pointers, and made 3-4 free throws. The Eagles kept any Saints player from double figures.

The Eagles shot 34.9% (15-43) from the field, making 4-11 three pointers, and 14-20 free throws. Marymount shot 11-53 (20.8%), making 0-15 three pointers and 12-19 free throws. UMW held a 37-36 rebounding edge.

Mary Washington will return home on Wednesday evening when they host Southern Virginia University at 6:00 p.m. for Senior Night.
