Interior Play Leads UMW Women to 66-48 Win Over York on Saturday

Sophomore center Brianne Comden scored 16 points, while Sarah Listenbee scored 12 and Caitlin Ciniero added 10 as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated York College, 66-48, on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference play. The Eagles improve to 13-4 on the season, and 9-1 in CAC play.

After gaining an early four point lead, UMW saw the Spartans use hot perimeter shooting to take an eight point lead, at 14-6, with 14:26 remaining in the first half. York led by nine, 21-12, with 10:58 to go, but the Eagles used baskets from Comden, Ciniero, and Listenbee on a 10-0 run to assume the lead at 22-21 with 7:30 to play.

York regained the lead, and the score stood tied three times in the final six minutes, but a three pointer from Erin Drumheller gave the Eagles a 33-30 lead with 1:39 to play. York connected on a free throw to make the halftime score 33-31.

Claire Haeuptle opened the second half with a three pointer to give the Eagles a five-point lead, which would grow to 13 on a Comden layup with 13:29 left. York cut the deficit to nine on two occasions, but a three from haeuptle kickstarted an 8-0 run that pushed the Eagle lead to 61-43 with 5:11 left.

A Ciniero jumper gave the Eagles a 21-point lead late, but York connected on a three pointer to push the final to 66-48.

Comden led UMW with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Listenbee scored 14 to go with eight rebounds. Ciniero scored 10 and Haeuptle added nine for the Eagles.

UMW shot 24-68 from the field (35.3%), including 5-16 three pointers, and made 13-22 free throws. York shot 28.9% (13-45) with 8-24 three pointers, and went 14-28 from the line. The Eagles led in rebounds, 46-42, and committed 11 turnovers to 22 for York.

The Eagles will visit Frostburg State University on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
