UMW Women's Basketball Rolls York, NY, 88-40, in Season Lidlifter

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team rolled to an 88-40 win over York College (N.Y.) on Saturday in its season opener. The Eagles' 88 points ties the school record for most points in a season opener, tying the mark set in 2004-05 against Plymouth State.

The Eagles dominated early and never looked back, scoring the first 19 points of the game. Senior guard Claire Haeuptle hit a pair of three pointers in the run, as seven players scored in the stretch. The Eagles built the lead to 20 at 23-3 with 11:35 left in the half on a Sarah Listenbee layup, and the lead reached 32 on a Kayla Parks three pointer with 2:50 left in the half (43-11). The Eagles took a 46-14 lead into intermission.

In the second half, the Eagles started with an 11-1 run to up its margin to 59-15 with 16:11 left. The lead ran between 43 and 51 for the remainder of the game.

"I'm very pleased with our opening game", said UMW head coach Deena Applebury. "Unity is strength, and tonight's performance showed it."

Haueptle led the Eagles with 16 points on 5-8 shooting, including four three pointers. Senior forward Aubrey Howland scored 14 points and added five rebounds and five steals, while freshman Kayla Parks added 10 points off the bench.  Freshman Taylor Barton scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds as well. Samantha Bond had nine points for York.

The Eagles shot a blistering 34-75 from the floor (45.3%), making seven three pointers, while limiting York to 19.2% shooting (10-52), and the Cardinals shot just 16-41 from the free throw line. UMW led in rebounds, 59-43, and caused 22 York turnovers.

The Eagles will face Widener University in the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament championship on Sunday at 2 p.m. Widener edged Virginia Wesleyan, 64-62, in the opening game.
