Partonen Lifts #19 UMW Women's Basketball Past Frostburg in CAC Opener, 69-53

Junior guard Sam Partonen scored a team-high 15 points in leading four Eagles in double figures as the 19th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 69-53 victory over Frostburg State University in both teams' CAC opener on Saturday at the Anderson Center.

The Eagles built a 34-25 halftime advantage, building a 13-4 lead over the opening seven minutes. UMW led by as many as 15 before the half, settling with a nine-point advantage at 34-25. Partonen led the way with eight points.

In the second half, the Eagles held the Bobcats to just 21% shooting, and raced to a 35-28 advantage in the second frame. The Bobcats cut the deficit to four at 35-31 with 17:09 to go, but UMW rallied with an 11-3 run to lead, 46-34, with 13:15 remaining. The lead stayed between 11 and 17 points for the remainder of the game.

Partonen made five field goals and five free throws en route to 15 points, while junior forward Aby Diop scored 11 points and eight rebounds, while Carol Dye scored 10 points, added 10 rebounds, and seven blocked shots. Sophomore guard Amanda Witmer added 10 points.

Mary Washington will visit Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
