Partonen, Dye Lead #13/#16 UMW Women's Basketball Past Randolph-Macon, 70-63

Junior guard Sam Partonen scored a career-high for the second straight night with 19 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 70-63 win at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday night in Ashland, Va. The Eagles move to 2-0 on the season.

The Eagles opened up an early 8-2 lead, but the Yellow Jackets went on a 9-0 run to lead, 11-8, with 13:38 left in the first half. The Eagles answered with a 15-2 run of their own to lead, 23-13, with 9:39 remaining. The Eagles scored the last 10 points of the first half to take a 40-24 lead to halftime.

Randolph-Macon responded in the second half, outscoring UMW, 39-30, but the Eagles' first half lead proved to be insurmountable. Partonen went 5-11 from the floor and 9-10 from the line for her 19 points, while senior center Carol Dye added 18 points on 8-10 shooting from the floor. Junior Aby Diop also reached double figures with 12 points.

Partonen was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while Dye joined her on the all-tournament team.

The Eagles will host Shenandoah University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in the home opener.
