UMW Sweeps DH with Randolph Wednesday

The Mary Washington softball team swept its doubleheader with Randolph College on Wednesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

Game 1 - Eagles win - 9-6

After falling behind by two runs in the first inning, the Eagles scored two in the third to even the score up when Bridget Laychak hit a home run over the left field wall to drive in Shelby Presgrave, who doubled earlier in the inning.

The Eagles would then take a 5-2 lead in the fourth when Abby Fielder reached on an error, allowing Emma Scheida to score. Then, Brigid Ward singled Fielder home for an RBI, and finally, Presgrave singled home Ward for the three-run lead.

The Wildcats would counter with four runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead, but UMW answered in the bottom of the inning as Hailee Danneker grounded out to drive in Emily Musso.

The Eagles would then score three runs in the sixth to take the lead and ultimately the game as Bridget Laychak would reach on a three-base error, scoring Presgrave as the go-ahead run. Then, Laychak scored on a wild pitch. And finally, Fielder would single home Shieda.

Caitlyn Burch would shut down the side in the bottom half to clinch the Game 1 victory for the Eagles.

Game 2 - Eagles win - 8-4

Burch continued her excellence in the circle for the Eagles in Game 2 as she pitched all seven innings, allowing three earned runs, while striking out nine.

Mary Washington scored two runs in the first when Emily Angel reached on an error that scored Sheida and Laychak. In the second, the Eagles would score another as Hannah Steele doubled home Presgrave to put the Eagles up, 3-0.

Randolph would score three runs -- two in the third and one in the fourth -- to tie it, but it was Mary Washington who came through in the clutch.

The Eagles would go on to score five runs -- aided by Hailee Danneker's home run to push the lead to two. Presgrave would add an RBI single and Shieda would add two more runs on a single of her own.

Randolph scored once more in the seventh but that was as close as it got as Danneker and Burch teamed up to cut another run down at the plate on a wild pitch.

The Eagles are back in action against Gettysburg on Friday afternoon.
