UMW Softball Takes Game 1 of DH Against Eastern Mennonite

The Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader with Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va., taking the first game, 5-3.

Game 1 - Eagles win - 5-3

Mary Washington used a three-run second inning to jump out to an early lead as Abby Fielder and Emily Angel would score on errors for the first and second runs of the inning. The third run of the inning came on Caitlyn Burch's solo home run --her first of the season.

Burch, too, got the start in the circle as she threw the first five innings, then came back out for the seventh -- yielding just one run. The senior recorded five strikeouts, while allowing seven hits and one walk.

The Eagles would go on to score one more in the fifth on Bridget Laychak's sac fly, then another in the sixth with Abby Fielder's RBI double.

Eastern Mennonite would provide a scare in the sixth, but that was as close as it would get as Burch shut down the side in the seventh.

Game 2 - Eagles lose - 7-1

Mary Washington would score the game's first run in the third with Shelby Presgrave reaching on a throwing error, allowing Hannah Steele to score, but Eastern Mennonite would tie it up in the fourth with a solo homer.

Then, the Royals would score six in the sixth to open the game up in their favor, 7-1.

Taylor Hudson got the start for the Eagles, allowing four runs (three earned) in five innings, striking out five in the process.

The Eagles are back in action against Randolph College on Wednesday in Fredericksburg, Va. with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
