UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader with Pacific Lutheran

In a pair of thrilling doubleheaders, the Mary Washington softball team (4-2) split Thursday's doubleheader in Lynchburg, Va., 5-3 and 4-3.

Game 1 - Eagles win - 5-3

In Game 1 of Thursday's action, the Eagles had to come from behind as they trailed Pacific Lutheran by a run after the first inning.

In the second, the Eagles tied the game with a wild pitch that Brigid Ward scored on, then took the lead in the third when Bridet Laychak doubled home Emma Schieda. But in the bottom of the third, Pacific Lutheran added a pair of runs to go back up, 3-2.

In the fifth, the Eagles would take the game back for good as Schieda would drive in Shelby Presgrave with a sac fly to tie it at three apiece, then Aminah Shakir scored on a wild pitch to give UMW the lead back, 4-3. In the sixth, Shakir would reach on an error by the second baseman, which allowed Abby Fielder to score.

Brooklynne James would go on to record the victory for the Eagles, pitching three innings in relief of starter Taylor Hudson. Samantha Stewart recorded her first save of the season by pitching a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.

Game 2 - Eagles fall - 4-3

In Game 2, UMW got out to a fast start when Schieda drove home Presgrave with a sacrafice fly to out the Eagles up, 1-0, in the bottom of the first. Pacific Lutheran would tie it in the third with an RBI double and that's where things stood until Schieda stepped up to the plate in the sixth.

With Kennedy Darling on base, Schieda drove a pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer to give UMW a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh.

But a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh would be enough to tie the game for Pacific Lutheran and push it into extra innings.

And in the ninth, Pacific Lutheran would score one final time with a sac fly that pushed their lead, 4-3. The Eagles had the tying run on third with two outs, but couldn't push the runner across to extend the game.

Caitlyn Burch pitched all nine innings for the Eagles as she struck out 12 hitters, while yielding three earned runs (four total).

The Eagles are back in action with a doubleheader against Bridgewater on Wednesday, March 13. First pitch in Fredericksburg is set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
