Dee Conway Announces Retirement Following 2023 Season

University of Mary Washington softball coach Dee Conway has announced her retirement following the 2023 softball season. Conway retires as the longest tenured coach in Mary Washington history (36 years), having coached both softball and volleyball for 26 years, with 1,081 combined career wins. She is the only coach the softball program has ever known, having started the program in 1987-88.

"During her long and renowned career as an Associate Professor, Assistant Athletic Director and Coach, Dee Conway has had a positive and lasting impact on many students, student-athletes, coaches, staff and the university at large", said UMW Director of Athletics Patrick Catullo. "Coach Conway will be remembered most for her work ethic and professionalism, and her oversight, mentorship and buildout of the volleyball and softball programs alike. Her contributions to the success of the Department of Athletics will be felt for many years to come. Dee will be sorely missed!"

On the softball field, her Eagles have captured 609 victories, most recently advancing to the CAC Championship in 2019, and winning 19 games this season entering the conference tournament.

The winningest coach in the history of the volleyball program at UMW, Conway led the Eagles to more than 400 victories in volleyball, with two NCAA Tournament appearances, and one Capital Athletic Conference title. Under her guidance, the Eagles recorded three 30-win seasons and three CAC regular season crowns. In softball, Conway has raised the program from scratch and taken it all the way to the NCAA Tournament. Along the way, she has won her own share of awards, including being named as the Capital Athletic Conference's Coach of the Year seven times.

One of the most dedicated and prepared coaches anywhere, Conway is a positive role model both on and off the field. Aside from her duties as volleyball and softball coach, Conway is an associate professor in the department of health and physical education at UMW, and in 2017, joined the UMW Athletics leadership team. She was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance in 2018.
