UMW Softball Remains Undefeated With Two Wins in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington softball team remained undefeated, with a pair of victories in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Tuesday. The Eagles topped Northern Vermont-Lyndon, 9-6, before defeating Albion, 9-1, in six innings. UMW is 6-0 on the season.

In the opener, the offensive fireworks started early, as each team scored a run in the first, and then Lyndon scored four times in the second. The Eagles then scored six runs in the botto of the second, keyed by run-scoring singles from Amina Shakir, Erica Shoop, and Hannah Steele.

UMW added a run in the third, and one more in the sixth. Shakir and Grace Drury provided RBI hits.

Shakir led the Eagles with three hits and two RBI, and Shoop drove in two. Sarah Higbee gained the win in relief, allowing one unearned run in 3.2 innings, on five hits and one strikeout.

In game two, UMW jumped ahead with two runs in the first, as Shakir doubled, and Shoop and Steele added RBI hits. The Eagles added five in the second, with the big hit being a two-run double from Shoop.

Albion scored once in the third, but UMW capped the game with two in the sixth on a two-run double from Rayna Lloyd.

Shoop was 3-3 with a double and three RBI, and Rayna Lloyd added a single and double and two runs knocked in. Stephanie Folkner gained the win in relief, allowing no runs on two hits in four innings, with no walks and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action with two games on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach against Shawnee State at 1:00 p.m.
