UMW Softball Sweeps Southern Va. in Tuesday Twinbill

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Tuesday doubleheader from Southern Virginia University, 5-0 and 4-0, at the Battleground. UMW improves to 13-10 on the season.

In the first game, UMW scored first with a run in the third inning. Brigid Ward singled to lead off the inning, and scored on a single from Maggie Mrowka. UMW added a pair in the fourth, as Bridget Laychak and Nya Lloyd singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on singles from Kayla Mann and Ward.

The Eagles added two in the fifth, as Emma Dickson singled, Caroline Bird walked, and Emma Schieda was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Laychak provided an RBI groundout, and Bird scored on a wild pitch.

Lloyd led UMW with a single and triple, while Dickson, Mann, and Ward each had two hits. Caitlyn Burch picked up the win, allowing no runs on three hits in seven innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

In the second game, UMW scored once in the fourth, as Dickson led off with a hit and scored on a two-out single from Bird. Dickson again started the rally in the sixth that led to three runs with a single. Mrowka followed with an RBI triple, and Bird singled to plate Mrowka. After a single from Schieda, Bird scored on a Laychak single. Hannah Steele capped the game two win with a diving, head-over-heels catch for the final out in left field.

Dickson and Bird each had two hits to pace the Eagles, whose eight hits were efficient to score four runs. Stephanie Folkner gained the win, allowing nio runs on four hits in 4.1 innings, with a pair of strikeouts. Taylor Hudson picked up the save, allowing two hits in 2.2 innings, with six strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they host Randolph College at 3:00 p.m.
