UMW Softball Splits Friday DH at Eastern Mennonite

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Friday doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite University, taking game one, 2-1, before falling in game two, 5-4. The Eagles move to 9-10 on the season.

UMW took game one in a pitcher's duel, as the game stayed scoreless to the sixth inning. UMW scored twice, as Bridget Laychak started the inning with a solo home run, and Grace Drury walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single from Brigid Ward. EMU scored once in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles held on for the 2-1 win.

In addition to Laychak and Ward's heroics, senior Maggie Mrowka had three hits for the Eagles. Caitlyn Burch gained her seventh win, allowing four hits and one run in seven innings, with no walks and seven strikeouts.

In game two, UMW scored one in the first, as Mrowka doubled and scored on a single from Caroline Bird. Bridgewater scored two in the second and two in the third, but the Eagles fought back with an unearned run in the fifth, and two in the seventh. Hannah Steele doubled and came around to score on a Mrowka home run to tie the score. EMU scored once in the seventh for the victory.

Mrowka doubled and homered, scoring two runs and driving in two, while Emma Dickson singled and doubled. Taylor Hudson took the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits, striking out 11 in 6.1 innings.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Mary Baldwin University at noon for a doubleheader.
