UMW Softball Sweeps Two in Myrtle Beach on Thursday

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept two games on Thursday in Myrtle Beach, S.C., defeating Purchase State, 12-0, and Waynesburg, 7-1. The Eagles improve to 7-6 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles scored five in the first, and added three in the third and four in the fourth. Caroline Bird singled and homered, scoring one run and driving in two, while Bridget Laychakhad two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI. Maggie Mrowka, Brigid Ward, Kaila Presbitero, and Grace Drury each provided doubles.

Brooklynne James gained the win, allowing just one hit in five innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.

In game two, the Eagles avenged an earlier loss in the week to Waynesburg. UMW led, 1-0, after three innings, and scored six in the final four innings.

Bird hit a single, double, and home run, scoring two runs and driving in two. Mrowka had three hits and three runs scored, while Aminah Shakir and Morgan Gilbert each singled and doubled.

Caitlyn Burch gained the win, allowing one unearned run on six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action next Thursday when they host Bridgewater College at 3:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
