UMW Softball Splits DH With Methodist on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a pair of games with Methodist University on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Eagles won the opener, 8-1, and dropped game two, 2-0, and move to 5-6 on the season. 

The Eagles raced ahead with seven runs in the second in the opener. Caroline Bird and Grace Drury singled and scored on a pair of errors. Maggie Mrowka reached on a bases-loaded fielder's choice to plate another run, and Aminah Shakir single added another. Emma Schieda followed with an RBI groundout, and Bird smacked a two-run double.

In the fourth, Mrowka singled, stole second, and scored on a Shakir sacrifice fly. Methodist scored one in the bottom of the fourth for the final margin.

Bird singled, doubled, and drove in two runs for UMW, while Shakir added two hits and two RBI.

Caitlyn Burch gained the win for UMW, allowing one unearned run on two hits in seven innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

In game two, both pitchers excelled, as both teams managed just three hits each. Methodist scored one in the third and one in the seventh. 

Bird doubled and Kayla Mann and Logan Gibson singled for UMW. Freshman Taylor Hudson took the tough luck loss, as she allowed two unearned runs on three hits in seven innings, with six walks and 12 strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday, with games against Purchase State and Waynesburg.
