UMW Softball Splits Two in Myrtle Beach on Monday

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a pair of games in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Monday. The Eagles topped Grove City College, 5-0, before falling to Shawnee State University, 6-2.

UMW opened the day with a 5-0 win over Grove City. The Eagles scored once in the first after a triple from Aminah Shakir and RBI ground out from Emma Schieda, and another in the second, as Bird opened with a double and scored on a Grace Drury sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Schieda led off with a hit and scored on a Bird single. In the sixth, UMW scored two, as Caitlyn Burch led off with a triple, and scored on an error. Bridget Laychak added an RBI single.

Burch was again stellar pitching, allowing two hits and no walks with five strikeouts in seven innings.

The Eagles fell to Shawnee State, 6-2, in game two. The Eagles fell behind, 1-0, in the first, but came back with a pair of runs in the second to take the lead. Kayla Mann and Nia Lloyd provided RBI hits in the inning. Shawnee State scored five in the third, and held on from there.

Bird led the Eagles at the plate with a single and double. 

UMW will face Widener and Waynesburg on Tuesday in Myrtle Beach.
