UMW Softball Closes Regular Season with Doubleheader Sweep of Mary Baldwin

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Thursday doubleheader at Mary Baldwin University, winning the opener, 5-4, and the second game, 7-2. The Eagles improve to 10-16 on the season.

In the first game, the Eagles scored twice in the first to take the early advantage. Bridget Laychak connected for a sacrifice fly, and Emma Schieda followed with an RBI single. The Squirrels cut the margin in half with one in the first, and the score stayed 2-1 until the seventh inning, where each team scored three runs. UMW gained runs courtesy of RBI singles from Schieda and Grace Drury.

Schieda led the Eagles with three hits, while Drury, Caroline Bird, and Morgan Gilbert each had two hits. Caitlyn Burch gained the win, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

In the second game, the Eagles rallied late from a 2-0 deficit for a 7-2 win. UMW trailed, 2-0, into the sixth, and scored three in the sixth and four in the seventh. Schieda drove in one run while reaching on an error, and Amina Shakir added a two-run single. In the seventh, Maggie Mrowka tripled and scored on the throw, and Shakir later hit a bases-clearing triple.

Shakir drove in five runs while going 3-4 to lead the offense. Stephanie Folkner gained the win, allowing one earned run on five hits in 5.1 innings.

UMW will compete in the Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Milwaukee, Wisc. next weekend.
