UMW Softball Splits Saturday Pair at Southern Va.

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Saturday doubleheader at Southern Virginia University, taking the opener, 8-0, before falling in eight innings in game two, 2-0. The Eagles move to 7-13 on the season, and 1-3 in league play.

The Eagles scored in every inning but the first in the opener, starting with two in the second. Emma Schieda singled and moved to second on a walk by Rachel Porchie. Schieda scored on an error, and Porchie followed on a sacrifice fly from Caroline Bird

In the third, Maggie Mrowka singled, stole second and third, and scored on a groundout from Bridget Laychak. Porchie doubled to lead off the fourth, and scored on a Morgan Gilbert single.

UMW scored four in the fifth, as Mrowka and Amina Shakir singled to lead off. Laychak provided an RBI single, and Porchie followed with a two-run triple, and scored on an error on the play.

Porchie's double, triple, three runs scored and two RBI led the Eagles, while Mrowka added two hits and two runs, and Laychak added two RBI. Caitlyn Burch gained the win, allowing two hits in five innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, neither offense could achieve a run until the eighth, on a two-run homer. Shakir and Grace Drury had hits for UMW. Burch came on in relief in the third inning and took the loss, allowing two hits in 4.1 innings, with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Shenandoah University at 3:00 p.m.
