UMW Softball Drops Twinbill to #5 Salisbury on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to fifth-ranekd Salisbury University in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 6-10 on the season, and 0-2 in league play. Scores were 4-0 and 14-1.

In the opener, the Sea Gulls posted their first two hits back to back in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead, and added three in the sixth en route to a 4-0 victory. Freshman Emma Schieda led UMW with a pair of singles, while Bridget Laychak added a single.

Freshman Caitlyn Burch took the loss, allowing one earned run on four hits in seven innings, with one walk and three strikeouts.

In the second game, the Sea Gulls scored twice in the first and once in the second, before the Eagles plated a run when Caroline Bird reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a ground out, and scored on a throwing error. Salisbury plated five runs in the fourth and six in the fifth.

Maggie Mrowka, Schieda, Grace Drury, Hadlea Valera, and Morgan Gilbert collected hits for UMW. Valera took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits in 3.1 innings, with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Virginia Wesleyan University at 3:00 p.m. for a pair of games.
