UMW Softball Splits Pair with St. John Fisher, Emerson on Tuesday in Arizona

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a pair of games in Tucson, Az. on Tuesday, falling to St. John Fisher, 5-3, before defeating Emerson College, 5-4, in nine innings. The Eagles move to 7-4-1 on the season.

In the opener, the host Cardinals jumped ahead with two runs in the first, before UMW answered with one in the bottom of the frame. Maggie Mrowka reached on an error with the bases loaded. The Cardinals added two in the third, and again UMW responded with one score, as Caroline Bird knocked home Danielle Newman with a sacrifice fly. 

The Eagles drew to within 4-3 in the fourth, as Hannah Bruns drove home Rachel Remer with a single, but the Cardinals added an insurance run in the sixth and held on for the win.

Newman singled and tripled to lead UMW, while Remer singled and doubled. Freshman Hadlea Valera took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in seven innings, with no walks and three strikeouts.

In the second game, UMW scored one in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Grace Walton, before Emerson plated four runs in the bottom of the inning. UMW battled back with two runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to knot the score, and scored the decisive run in the ninth as Megan Hibbs knocked home runner Bruns with the deciding run.

Grace Drury led the Eagles at the plate with two singles and a double. Hibbs gained the win, scattering eight hits over nine innings.

The Eagles will continue in Tucson on Thursday with a pair of games.
