UMW Softball Tops York, 10-2, to Advance to CAC Tournament Championship Series

The University of Mary Washington softball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in a 10-2 victory over York College of Pa. on Monday in the final game of the CAC Tournament pod at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 21-17 on the season and will host second-seeded Christopher Newport University on Friday in game one of the CAC Championship series at 4 p.m.

The Eagles' offense started the first with a single from Hannah Bruns, who moved to third on an error. Sophomore Rachel Porchie followed with a two-run double and scored on a fielder's choice. Danielle Newman, who had singled in the inning, also scored on a fielder's choice.

In the second inning, Bruns singled and Porchie followed with her seventh home run of the season. York scored two in the third, but the Eagles responded with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. Newman led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and moved to third on a single from Rachel Remer. Courtney Shea provided a two-run single, and Bruns tripled to score Shea. After a walk, Porchie drove in Bruns with a single to cap the scoring.

Porchie had a single, double, and home run with five RBI. Bruns and Newman each had two singles and a triple to also lead the 11-hit attack.

Freshman Juliet Truslow allowed five hits and two runs in five innings in gaining the win. She walked two and struck out two.

The Eagles will host Christopher Newport in the championship series, which begins with one game on Friday at 4 p.m., and continues on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The tournament champion advances to the NCAA Tournament.
