UMW Softball Drops Saturday CAC Doubleheader at York

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a Saturday doubleheader at York College of Pa. in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Spartans won the opener, 5-2, before claiming the nightcap, 9-1, in six innings. The Eagles slip to 14-17-1 overall, and 3-4-1 in CAC action.

The Eagles dropped the opener, 5-2. York got off to an early lead with two runs in the first and one in the second, before UMW answered. Amy Sykes opened the third with a walk and moved to third on a single from Hannah Bruns, who went to second on the errant throw, placing runners at second and third with no outs. Sykes scored on a wild pitch strike three as Caroline Callahan reached, and Bruns scored on an RBI groundout from Danielle Newman.

The Spartans answered with two of their own in the bottom of the third, and the pitching and defense prevailed from there, as the final stood at 5-2. Bruns and Malia Rogers each had two hits, while Kassie Bender added a double for the Eagles. Junior Kara Deppe took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings, with one walk and two strikeouts. Megan Hibbs didn't allow a hit in 2.1 innings of relief, striking out one.

In the second game, York scored two in the first and two in the third, before adding one in the fifth and four in the sixth in a 9-1 win. The Eagles' run came in the sixth, as Rogers drove home Caroline Callahan. Rogers had two hits and Callahan three to account for the Eagles' five hits.

Jena Calvitti took the loss, allowing three unearned runs on three hits in two innings, with a pair of walks.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they host nationally ranked Christopher Newport University for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
