UMW Softball Tops Chatham, Hilbert in Myrtle Beach on Monday

The University of Mary Washington softball team opened its spring break trip in Myrtle Beach, SC with a pair of victories on Monday, over Chatham College, 10-1, and Hilbert College, 10-3. The Eagles improve to 3-5 on the season.

In the game against Chatham, the Eagles plated four runs in the third and six in the sixth. Danielle Newman led the Eagle offense with two hits, including a home run, two runs scored, and four RBI. Caroline Callahan added a pair of hits and two runs scored, and Rachel Porchie added a pair of RBI.

Jena Calvitti gained the win for the Eagles, allowing one earned run on one hit in 3.1 innings, with a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts.

The Eagles then defeated Hilbert by a score of 10-3. The Eagles scored in every inning but one, as Kassie Bender led with three hits. Newman doubled and tripled to complete the cycle in the twinbill, scoring twice and driving in three. Malia Rogers drove in four runs. Porchie and Courtney Shea each had a pair of hits as well.

Kara Deppe gained the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings, walking three and striking out six.

The Eagles will continue at the event on Tuesday.
