UMW Softball Tops York, 4-0, in CAC Tournament 1st Round

The University of Mary Washington softball team opened day one of the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament in Newport News with a 4-0 shutout victory over York College on Thursday morning. The Eagles move to the winner's bracket and will face Christopher Newport at 2:00 p.m. today.

The Eagles jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the second inning. With one out, senior Brittnee Haynes doubled, and after a strikeout, scored on a single from Courtney Shea, who advanced to second on the throw. Amy Sykes followed with an RBI double, and the Eagles were on their way.

UMW added a run in the third, as Hannah Bruns singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a Malia Rogers single. The Eagles added an insurance run in the fifth, as Bruns singled and moved to second as Rogers reached on an error. Danielle Newman singled home Bruns to account for the final run.

Bruns was 4-4 with two runs scored and Haynes finished 2-3 in the game. Sophomore Kara Deppe gained the win, allowing three hits and three walks in seven innings while striking out 10.

The Eagles will face top seeded Christopher Newport today at approxiumately 2 p.m.
