UMW Softball Tops York Late, 2-1, in CAC Tourney Game One

After six scoreless innings, the fireworks began in a frantic sveenth inning, as the University of Mary Washington softball team defeated York College of Pa., 2-1, on Thursday morning in game one of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournamant in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles will advance to face top-seeded Salisbury University at 2:00 p.m. today.

Junior pitcher Erin Stinson was in control through six innings, allowing just one hit with no walks. But the Eagle bats were also held silent on four hits. In the final inning, Hannah Hautz provided a one-out single, and pinch hitter Sarah Manugo walked to put runners at first and second. After a flyout, pinch hitter Emma Rakowski gave the Eagles a 1-0 with an RBI double, and pinch hitter Courtney Merson followed with an RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh, York led off with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 2-1, and continued with a single. Freshman pitcher Kara Deppe was summoned by the Eagles, and gained an out on a sacrifice before hitting the next batter to put runners on first and second. A fly out to second base provided the second out, but another hit batsman loaded the bases. Deppe ended the contest by striking out the next batter on three pitches.

The Eagles will be back in action today at 2:00 p.m. when they face Salisbury, following the noon contest between Frostburg and Christopher Newport.
