UMW Softball Sweeps Twinbill at Bridgewater on Monday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Monday evening doubleheader at Bridgewater College. The Eagles took the opener, 5-0, and came from behind to win the second, 5-3. The Eagles improve to 5-9 on the season.

In the opener, pitchers Erin Stinson and Courtney Merson combined to allow four hits in seven innings, as the Eagles used a five-run second inning for the game's only scoring. Stinson gained the win, walking one and striking out five, allowing four hits. Merson pitched two innings of hitless relief, getting out of a sixth-inning jam.

In the pivotal second, Amy Sykes walked and Emily Rakowski followed by reaching on an error. Lindsey Aylor grounded out, sending runners to second and third. Caroline Callahan reached on a sacrifice fielder's choice, and Olivia Tatara followed with an RBI double.

Stefannie Asselanis then provided a two-run single, and Hannah Hautz provided an RBI double to cap the scoring.

Tatara singled and doubled for UMW, while Asselanis and Malia Rogers each added two hits.

In game two, Bridgewater jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning, but the Eagles scored once in the second and four times in the seventh to take the thrilling victory.

The Eagles scored in the second as Hautz singled and scored. In the seventh, Caroline Callahan, Tatara, and Asselanis opened with consecutive hits, and Hautz followed with a bases clearing double to give UMW the lead, and scored on a Sykes single.

Freshman Kara Deppe gained the win for UMW, allowing four hits in 6.2 innings, walking two and striking out eight, with no runs allowed.
