UMW Softball Sweeps York on Senior Day

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from York College, 6-0 and 5-0, on Saturday at the Battleground on senior day to improve to 11-20 overall and 3-3 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles began swiftly in game one, scoring four first inning runs. After a leadoff walk to Brandee Adams, Bireet Chitty and Brittany Scites followed with bunt singles before Emily Nykorchuk singled to drive in one, and then senior Kerry Busby drove in two runs with a double.

UMW scored twice in the fourth as Hannah Williams led off with a single and stole second. After Adams was hit by a pitch, Chitty singled in Williams, Adams scored on a Scites RBI groundout.

Senior Annie Blaine gained the shutout win, allowing four hits in seven innings, with three walks and one strikeout. Chitty led UMW with three hits, while Scites and Emily Briggs each had two.

In the nightcap, UMW scored once in the third, twice in the fourth, and twice in the sixth for a 5-0 win. Chitty singled with one out and later scored on an error for UMW's first run.

In the fourth, Alex Tenney reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a triple by Adams, who scored on a Chitty single. In the sixth, Brianna D'Agata single, advanced on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a flyout before scoring on another flyout. Chitty doubled and scored on a Scites single.

Chitty completed her stellar day at the plate with four hits for UMW, making her 7-8 on the day. D'Agata was 2-2 for the Eagles.

Hannah Otterman allowed just two hits in seven innings in the shutout win, walking one and striking out three.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Eastern mennonite University at 3:00 p.m.
