UMW Softball Drops Doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a doubleheader at nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College on Thursday afternoon in Virginia Beach. The Eagles fall to 8-13 on the season.

In the opener, the hosts won, 5-0, scoring once in the first, and twice in the fourth and sixth innings. Both teams had seven hits in the game, but the Eagles couldn't bunch them together to plate a runner. Freshman Emily Briggs had a single and double to pace UMW, while junior Bireet Chitty added two singles.

In the nightcap, the Eagles jumped ahead with two runs in the first. With two outs, Brittany Scites singled and Emily Nykorchuk reached on an error in advance of a Brianna D'Agata two-run single.

The Marlins answered with six in the first and four in the second. The Eagles scored again in the fourth as Hannah Williams reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error. She scored on a single from Chitty.

Chitty added a pair of hits in the nightcap, while D'Agata, Nykorchuk, and Scites singled.

The Eagles will open Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday when they host Frostburg State University at noon.
