UMW Softball Tops Mt. Aloysius, La Roche in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington broke open a pair of tight games late to come away with a pair of wins over Mount Aloysius College, 9-0, and La Roche College, 7-4, on Thursday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Eagles improve to 5-6 on the season.

In the win over Mount Aloysius, the Eagles scored seven times in the last two innings, breaking open a 2-0 game. The Eagles scored once in the fourth on an Emily Nykorchuk RBI single, and another run in the fifth as Brittany Scites and scored on a groundout.

The Eagles plated five in the sixth, with Kerry Busby and Emily Briggs providing two-run singles. In the seventh, Nykorchuk drove in winning pitcher Hannah Otterman with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Nykorchuk was 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, and Scites was 3-4 with two runs scored for the Eagles. Briggs had two hits and three RBI and Busby two hits and two runs driven in. Otterman threw a three-hit shutout, allowing two walks and striking out nine in seven innings of work.

In the nightcap, the Eagles trailed, 4-3, through four innings. The Eagles went ahead in the fifth with a two-run homer from Brianna D'Agata and added another run as Stefannie Asselanis scored on an error. Nykorchuk drove in Scites with an insurance run in the seventh.

Asselanis had three hits and scored two runs to lead the Eagles, and Briggs was 2-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Otterman gained the win after allowing just one walk and no hits in three innings of relief.

Mary Washington will face Mount Aloysius and La Roche again on Friday to wrap up their Southern trip.
