UMW Softball Splits Tuesday Doubleheader in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a Tuesday doubleheader in Myrtle Beach, SC, topping Mount St. Mary, 3-1, before falling to Lycoming, 7-5. UMW moves to 3-6 on the season.

In the victory over Mount St. Mary, the Eagles plated one run in the first, as Bireet Chitty led off with a single, advanced to second on a single by Brandee Adams, and scored on a Kerry Busby single. UMW added two in the fourth, as Emily Briggs doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice, and scored on a Hannah Williams single. After another single and a walk, Williams scored on a Chitty single.

Mount St. Mary's scored one in the sveenth, but UMW held on for the 3-1 win. Offensively, the Eagles were led by Chitty, Adams, Briggs, and Hannah Otterman, who all had two hits. Otterman picked up the win allowing no earned runs in seven innings with no walks and nine strikeouts.

In the 7-5 loss to Lycoming, a pivotal five run second inning for Lyco was the difference. After both teams scored twice in the first, the home team posted five runs on four hits and an error for the deciding edge.

UMW scored once in the fourth as Brianna D'Agata was hit by a pitch and scored on an Alex Tenney single. UMW scored twice more in the seventh, as Hannah Williams knocked in Brandee Adams with a single, and Emily Nykorchuk singled to score Emily Briggs.

After an off day Wednesday, the Eagles will return to action in Myrtle Beach on Thursday.
