The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of one-run contests at Shenandoah University on Wednesday in Winchester. The Eagles fell, 2-1, in the opener, before falling, 12-11, in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Eagles fell behind 1-0 in the first but tied the score in the second. Emily Nykorchuk doubled with one out and scored on freshman Stefannie Asselanis' RBI single. The Hornets went ahead for good with a home run to lead off the inning.

Nykorchuk led the Eagles at the plate with a pair of doubles. Hannah Otterman allowed one earned run in six innings on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles dropped a wild 12-11 game in the nightcap. UMW scored twice in the first to take a 2-0 lead, as Nykorchuk again provided a two-run double. After the Hornets took the lead with one in the first and two in the second, UMW forged ahead with three runs in the fourth.

With two outs in the fourth, Alex Tenney singled and scored on Asselanis' RBI double. Brandee Adams followed with an RBI triple, and scored on Emily Briggs' RBI single. Shenandoah responded with five in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead, only to see the Eagles claw back with six in the fifth to take an 11-8 lead.

The Eagles scored three runs on three walks and three wild pitches before Adams cleared the bases with a three-run triple. Shenandoah scored three in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score, and found the game winner in the sixth to win, 12-11.

Adams led UMW with a single and two triples and four RBI. Briggs was 2-3 with two RBI, and Nykorchuk hit her third double of the day in the nightcap. Otterman took the loss in relief, allowing one earned run in 2.2 innings of work with two walks and one strikeout.

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when they face Gwynedd-Mercy College in Myrtle Beach at 11:30 a.m.
